About
I am a surgeon practicing in the United States, and live with my spouse and children. Besides medicine, I am passionate about finances, money, building wealth, and investing.
While I have always contemplated these topics deeply and have thought about writing a blog for many years, this blog was finally born when my life and career reached a steady state. We were in our late 30s, and I was several years into my practice after having completed my medical training.
From a career standpoint, my surgical practice was growing nicely. My income was well over a million dollars per year, we had just bought our first house, and we were multimillionaires on paper.
I was very good at playing the game of climbing the medicine career ladder, and trained at some of the top institutions in the world. Ultimately, I landed a dream position in my field where I could earn a very high income, doing only the types of surgeries I wanted, with good work-life balance.
Even then, there was a constant low level of je ne sais quoi. I wouldn’t call it discontent or unhappiness, but the feeling that there was something more than just going to work as a surgeon until I was 65.
I have always been drawn to finance, money, and investing. I started investing with my allowance money as a young child. Even now in my free time, I could spend hours devouring 10-Ks and annual reports. I think I’ve read every single thing that Warren Buffett has ever written, including every Berkshire Hathaway and Buffett Partnership shareholder letter. This was turbocharged when I learned about the FIRE (financial independence retire early) movement, and read as much as I could in that space.
I’m sure the world doesn’t need another personal finance blog, but I’ve always enjoyed writing and I think the process of writing helps me better crystallize my own thoughts. So, this is mostly for myself, but I’m also very curious if there is an audience for all of these thoughts in my head. Surely I’m not the only high-income professional who feels like there is more to the grind, that we are not bound by the proverbial golden handcuffs.
